Job optimism is growing in the U.S. as ”everyone agrees the recession is over”.
Well, not everyone, exactly. Let’s say everyone save for the chairwoman of the economic council, Dr Christine Romer, who says the recession won’t “be over until the jobless rate returned to about 5 per cent”.
Is she just being a negative killjoy? I don’t know. It seems the situation is looking better than it has for a long time. Maybe even she will agree that at least things are moving in the right direction.

I don’t know what John Daly shoots on the golf course these days, but he sure is shooting his mouth off a lot about Tiger Woods. Did the Tiger appoint John Daly as his spokesperson, adviser, family counsellor, or all of the above? I don’t know.
Tiger Woods is a big boy and can think and speak for himself. It’s beyond comprehension why there’s such an almighty brouhaha about such a trivial incident. We all have spats with our wives and anyone who says he doesn’t is a liar. And anyway, we don’t know for sure if he actually did have a spat with his wife on this occasion.
For goodness sake, let’s leave the guy and his wife alone!

Hussein faced a punishment of 40 lashes when she was convicted in July for wearing her green trousers in public. But a Sudanese court in September ordered her to pay a fine instead, while 10 of the 12 other women arrested with her at a Khartoum restaurant on July 3 were lashed.
After she refused to pay the fine, Hussein served a one-day jail sentence.

WASHINGTON — There may be additional e-mails that could have tipped off law enforcement or military officials to the Fort Hood shooter before he went on his deadly rampage, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee said Friday.
It looked like some people goofed who shouldn’t have, with tragic consequences.

The Scottish economy expanded for the fourth consecutive month in October with growth in both the manufacturing and service sectors.
Manufacturing and services rose for the second straight month as the worst economic slump and banking crisis since the 1930s receded. New orders also rose, albeit supported by continued discounting, the Markit Scotland PMI survey indicated.
Although declining backlogs indicated spare capacity remained in the economy, Scottish private sector firms expanded their workforces on average for the first time since March last year.
Looking good. Lets hope it’s a worldwide trend.

‘Muslim Army Major Kills 13 and Injures 31 in Shootout With Troops at U.S. Military Base’
Thirteen people have been killed and at least 31 wounded when a soldier with two guns went on a rampage at America’s biggest military base.
The gunman, named as Major Nidal Malik Hasan, 39, was cut down by authorities at the Fort Hood base in Texas – but survived the shootout and is now in custody.
The Virginia-born soldier is a Muslim convert and furious over the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan by U.S. and allied troops.
Recently it was ‘the men of the Grenadier Guards and Royal Military Police’ who, inside their fortified compound in Afghanistan, were gunned down by a comrade-in-arms. Now the same fate has overtaken American soldiers on home soil.
The Trojan Horse syndrome.
With its soft underbelly exposed like this, the U.S. security cluster — not just its military — will have to take some hard decisions.

WASHINGTON — The House voted overwhelmingly on Thursday afternoon to offer up to 20 more weeks of unemployment benefits to those who have been out of work a long time, sending the measure to President Obama for his signature. The White House said that he would do so on Friday morning.
It’s a lifeline to cling to until things improve, as they surely must before long. Read the complete article.

Nov. 5 (Bloomberg) — Voters delivered the unmistakable message two days ago that they are worried about the U.S. economy, and tomorrow they could have even more reason to fret.
The unemployment rate for October is expected to notch up to 9.9 percent on its way to punching through the 10 percent mark early next year, according to the median forecast of economists in a Bloomberg survey.
A 10 percent jobless rate would be the highest in 26 years, ensuring that the economy remains a top issue in the midterm Congressional elections next November, and a political headache for President Barack Obama.
The honeymoon is over. Americans want the recession to end. That’s the bottom line.
